In Bologna video filming continues, preparing the launch of the MOOC

Mona Lisa Smile Team

Video filming continues in Bologna where the project coordinator UNIBO is preparing, together with the partnership of the other universities and hospitals, the launch of the MOOC.

Mona Lisa Smile” develops a digital training (MOOCS) and a specific app, and addresses the needs of education and training of health professionals on endometriosis in adolescence, with the aim of reducing the diagnostic delay.

The project takes its name from a famous study that compared the presence of endometriosis in the adolescent young woman to a Mona Lisa smile, with a mysterious innocence.

The University of Bologna is the project coordinator, with the support of 5 European partners:

  • University of Siena in Italy
  • University of Liège in Belgium
  • Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
  • IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Bologna
  • Skåne University Hospital in Sweden.

Endometriosis diagnostic delay is estimated to be around 7 years, despite the early symptoms onset. Early diagnosis, in particular in adolescents, still represents a challenge for clinicians. The diagnostic delay is probably due to an inadequate knowledge of the disease among health professionals, together with the peculiar aspects of this condition in adolescent patients. The complaints are common and elicit compassion, but do not stimulate a search for the cause.

Endometriosis is a chronic benign disease characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. It affects 10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide, with a huge negative impact on their daily life activities, emotional wellbeing and social relations. Moreover, it represents an economic burden, both for patients and healthcare systems. Despite the wide diffusion and increasing healthcare awareness of the disease, the diagnostic delay is still a reason for concern. Globally, the delay from symptom onset to diagnosis is currently estimated at 7-11 years.
